Species loss ‘bad for our health’

The loss of biodiversity is never a good thing but, according to researchers, many of the species which die off or are killed off have many potential benefits for humanity.

Case in point: the southern gastric brooding frog, whose strange anatomy and rearing methods might have led to new treatments for stomach ulcers. Unfortunately, it was last recorded in the wild in 1981.

Army, Marines allow more convicts to enlist

First it was the hiring of mercenaries as more than half the force in Iraq, then it was the dumbing down of the U.S. military by relaxing intelligence requirements to reach recruitment quotas, and now the military has sunk lower once again by allowing the recruitment of convicts.

Felons convicted of burglary, aggravated assault, manslaughter and sexual offenses can now join up to fight the international war on terror. But if you have been convicted of violent sexual offenses or drug trafficking don’t bother applying, you will not be accepted.

Obama is better equipped to lead country through change it craves

Great Op-Ed piece from The Philadelphia Inquirer by Chris Satullo.

Mr. Satullo very eloquently describes many of the same conclusions we have reached here at Rebel in our decision to support the candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States of America.

Michael Coren on Canada’s biggest mistake: Gay marriage

Michael Coren believes that legalized gay marriage is “Canada’s biggest mistake,” yet he produces no evidence whatsoever to back up his claim, and instead falls back on the old arguments of morality and the “slippery slope” of gay marriage ultimately leading to polygamy and bestiality becoming social norms.

If gay marriage is truly the biggest mistake Canada has ever made then shouldn’t there be evidence to back that up; a rise in violence, youth suicides, domestic abuse, or divorce rates? And if there are no facts to back up the claim, is it not merely rabble-rousing bull shit?

Michael Coren could have easily become the first to simultaneously win Spin of the Week and What’s Wrong With America? for the same piece, but we at Rebel feel any designation would lend more credibility to this piece than it deserves.
